Bank to Redeem 1928 Penny at 40th Anniversary
Till side National Bank marks 40 years since its founding with a penny redemption day on July 6. Each customer may redeem one 1928 penny for a new dollar bill and receive a small desk bank as a token. The bank opened July 6 1920, chartered May 21 1920, later moving to its current building February 1 1921.

The Zoning Board of Adjustment reserved its decision last Thursday on a variance for a self service laundromat at 1123 Liberty Avenue near Fitzpatrick Street. Albert A. Wenzel seeks approval despite code limits. a 24 hour operation and 20 washers plus 10 dryers faced opposition from Dr. Ira Blumenthal and others over parking smoke and noise. Also reserved were applications for College Inn at 334 Yale Avenue for a 2000 square foot addition and for the Polish American Club at 400 Bloy Street adding a lounge and dance hall expansion. Objectors cited parking, traffic, noise, and air vent concerns from nearby residents.

Hillside Opposes Route 78 Plans At Newark Hearing
Hillside Mayor W. William Di Buono announced strong opposition to Route 78 routing that could cut through Union County. Alternate 2 and 3 would seize homes and businesses near the Irvington boundary, costing millions in property value and tax ratables, while worsening congestion on Route 22. Alternate 1 affects 640 properties at about 40 million. Alternate 2 about 608 properties near 33 million. Alternate 3 around 486 properties near 33 million.

Hillside PAL Youth Building Fund treasurer Henry G. Gron reports $6,019.92 raised toward a $20,000 goal with $5,799.25 disbursed leaving $220.17. pledges totaling $2,616 will augment the balance as proceeds from a May fair Theater benefit add $481. July 40 notes a new PAL building near Hillside Avenue to be finished in about 15 days with a September dedication. The temporary PAT HQ closed last Saturday and furniture moved. Industrial Foundation projects chair William Buie says pledges of $40,000 toward the remaining cost are sought, with more than $32,000 raised so far.

Congregation Launches Building Fund Drive in Sillside
Dr Joseph Peyser president of the Conservative Congregation of Sillside announced a building fund campaign after a unanimous vote. The 95 year old 910 Salem Ave temple will be expanded around the current house to include sanctuary auditorium classrooms library chapel and offices.
