Red Feather Goal Set At 514028 In Union County Drive
The Commun ity Welfare Council of Eastern Union County set an 514,028 goal for this fall campaign. The goal, up about 10 percent from last year, includes 26 agencies led by Arbus Taylor and Harry A. Cooper, with Homemaker Service added and Sister Kenny Foundation rejected. The study committee noted the Homemaker Service provides needed help to illnesses with 4,085 hours served locally.

John A. Hughes Dies Former Hillside Fireman at 71
John A. Hughes, 71, former Hillside Fire Department member for 30 years, died June 17 at Veterans Hospital East Orange. Services at Growney Funeral Home with American Legion and Masonic rites. interment in Bloomsbury Cemetery. Survived by wife A Mabel Duckworth Hughes, two sons John and Robert N, and two grandchildren. Hughes was born in Wales, came to the U.S. in 1903, worked as a stonecutter, joined the fire department in Hillside, retired in 1945, and later worked for BAL HeLa Co. WWI veteran and member of several fraternal organizations.
