Hillsiders Graduate From Newark State on Thursday
Thirty two Hillsiders received degrees at Newark State College during the Thursday exercises on the Library Green. Commencement speaker William Buckley, author and television personality, delivered the address. Masters of Arts went to Roberts Conway and Michael Leta. Bachelor of Arts with honors included Shirley Bailey, Carol Beris, Pauline Byrne, Retta Geleerman, Ruth Silber, Sandra Goldberg, and Patricia Demnil. Katz Appointment Sparks Witte Questions on Board
Township committee appointed Samuel Katz secretary to the board of assessors, the only full time member. Arnold Witte questioned need for more than one assessor and secretary duties while others on the board work part time. Ritz and Ross also part time. Ritz submitted resignation after fourteen years. The law reportedly requires a secretary and its salary is in the assessors’ pay. Mayor Menza Di Diamond will report answers at next meeting. Summer hires of ten youths at $1.50 per hour sparked pay-rate debates with Education hiring unknown.
