Hillside Officials Push Weequahic Route in Trenton Meeting

Hillside officials returned from a Monday Trenton meeting on Route 78 with guarded optimism. Assembly Speaker LeRoy D Aloia presided amid scenes of uninvited attendance and strong opposition from the Essex County Park Commission. Monroe Ackerman, Hillside’s special attorney, challenged the speaker’s bias and urged Hillside voices be heard. The State route proposed for Weequahic is cheaper than five alternates, and would better serve the national defense highway plan, though concerns about triggering traffic ties with Route 22 persist.
