Hillside Little League Reaches District Semi Finals

Hillside American League All Stars win two games advancing to the district semi finals. Vincent Rispoli pitches a no hitter in the 11 0 victory over Tiverton American. They lose 9 6 to Irvington International in the third game. Team honors and roster noted with a memorial for founder John Beattie observed before the game. A charity softball game is scheduled for the evening at Late Share Little League stadium.

Second man sought in Shannon murder case

Newark police held Craig Johnson 19 of 278 Seymour Ave Newark five days after the July 18 murder of Frederick Shannon at Rahner's Mobil Gas on Route 22. A second suspect Gene Perry remained at large with a last address on Hunterdon Street Newark. Johnson was arraigned and held without bail. Police credited Hillside and Union County investigators, including Capt Erdman and Det. Minervino, with the effort.

Murder Victim Mrs Hathaway Dies After Mugging

Thelma Miller Hathaway, 71, of 29 Coe Ave, Elizabeth, died July 23 at Elizabeth General Hospital after being mugged July 15 while walking from her home to a relative’s. Police caught suspects Andrew Haywood, 28, and Alfonso Miller, 23, both of 950 Putton St, Elizabeth, after a foot chase. They face charges including atrocious assault and battery and resisting arrest. autopsy results may add murder charges. Hathaway had long ties to Hillside clubs and Trinity Episcopal Church. She is survived by her son Hobart, sister Pauline Miller, brother Dwight Miller, and four grandchildren. Funeral arrangements were handled by Growney Funeral Home.

Vets To Host Patients At State Arts Center

Peter Rozano age 18 of 162 Joston Ave was arrested at 4 12 am Wednesday for being under the influence of a hallucination. Walter Cline 22 of 63 Chancellor Ave Newark was arrested at 1 am Friday for narcotic influence and disorderly conduct with Thomas Govan 19 of 126 Watson Ave also Newark. Robert Briscohill 30 of 30 Keer Ave Newark was arrested for concealed weapon after being found in a car behind Parigian Carpet Co. at 1475 N Broad St and held for 25 dollar bail.

Six Teams Compete In Center League Softball Action

The Center League begins play with Centerfield team taking early lead through two straight wins. Competing teams include Central Ave Race Street Harden-Looker Calvin Coolidge and George Washington. Hillside Theater Workshops For All Ages At Firehouse Theater

Hillside Community Players sponsor three workshops starting this week at the Firehouse Theater on Maple Avenue at Oakland Terrace. Tuesday mornings from 1 to 12 am feature Elinor Newoorn for grades six to eight, via Union County Parks and Recreation Association with Union Spurty Parks Commission. Wednesday nights offer a teen workshop led by William Nosenbauh. A drama presentation workshop runs three weeks, then a final audition for adults on the last Thursday in August at 6 open hours.

Board Sets Policy On Publications

Mummers Parade A Mummers String Band Pay in Union County

Union County Park System hosts a Golden Anniversary event featuring the Hegeman String Band of Philadelphia and the Trilby String Band of Philadelphia. Both perform twenty minute drills and hour and a half concerts in Union Court and Warinanco Park with schedule from 9:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday August 1. The Hegeman plays 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Warinanco Park Stadium in Elizabeth and Roselle, under Alfred Fink. the Trilby performs 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Mei sel Avenue Athletic Field in Springfield under Adam Quaglia. Both groups have won national awards and toured major U.S. cities. Public invited to attend and join the celebration.

Demonstrate Model Rockets at Trailside Watchung Reservation

The Trailside Model Rocket Club affiliated with the Union County Park Commission will stage a model rocket demonstration on Sunday August 1 from 1 to 4 PM. It will occur on the lawn behind the Trailside Nature and Science Center to honor astronauts on the moon that day with hourly rockets fired at 1, 2, and 4 PM.
