July 4 Ceremony at Statue in Union Square
The Boudis chapter of the DAR and the thrown chapter of the SAR held July 4 exercises at the statue in Union Square and Elizabeth Avenue, with Mrs Sherman G. Wemple presiding the DAR portion and Mr Norman Wil of the SAR. Grace Williams led the salute to the flag and Mrs Wemple spoke on the day’s significance. The singing of the Star Spangled Banner was led by Mrs Lloyd Clark with Explorer Scout Douglas Joy Son. Father Roland W. Muenzen gave the invocation, Commissioner Joseph Walker dedicated the municipal wreath, and Arthur Cule spoke on the battles at Wyebellt Avenue. Speakers explained why the statue was erected for the Minute Men. 6,000 troops invaded the town. Dr Malcolm B. Gilman spoke on the Jersey Blues, who have exchanged since the 1600s. The Jersey Blues and the Declaration of Independence were read, then the bell rang and cannon salutes followed. Afterward DAR and SAR members attended a second breakfast at Boxwood Hall hosted by Arthur Ole.
