Hillside National Bank’s 40th Birthday Celebration
The Hillside National Bank marked its 40th anniversary by distributing 2002 dollars in pennies and bills to customers in six hours last Wednesday. About 36 bicycles gathered before opening, and a crowd spilled onto the street by noon, requiring police assistance. Firecracker incident leads to $10 fine in union court
Mrs Doris Blakely of 621 Colonial Arms Road was fined $10 in municipal court after tossing a firecracker from a moving car near a Hillside police car on June 22. She said she did it to keep the explosive away from her children and that she was returning from New York with her husband who obtained the firecracker. She admitted lighting it with a cigarette before dropping it out of the car.

Driver Pleads Not Guilty in Death by Motor Vehicle Charge
In Municipal Court Magistrate Henry Goldhor kept James E. Moriarty in $2,000 bail for grand jury review after a preliminary hearing on a charge of causing death by operation of a motor vehicle. Four-year-old Kathleen Baumgartner died June 18 when a rented truck struck her as witnesses from Franklin Street testified. Prosecutors argued driving with negligence. Raise $64,000 For New Synagogue At Hillside Dinner
The Conservative Congregation of Hillside held a kick-off dinner at Ann Gordon's in Newark raising 64 thousand dollars from 29 people for a 150 thousand dollar building fund campaign to construct a new synagogue at 910 Salem Avenue.
