New Type Safety Island Planned On Route 29

The State Highway Department plans a new type center island on Route 29 to deflect or stop vehicles. Deputy Chief Paul F. Korlesky told the Safety Council at its first session that the 18 to 20 inch ridged safety barriers will force cars back into lanes or stop if they continue. After two auto deaths from center isle jumps, warning signs at each overpass will be requested and safety education via newspapers and billboards will be used.
