The New Jersey State Department of Civil Service will hold patrolman and fireman exams in Hillside. Filing closes February 18, with applications available at the Department in Trenton or the township clerk’s office. This marks the first exams for new and replacement firemen and patrolmen since Hillside joined Civil Service at the last general election.
The New Jersey Supreme Court upheld a $100 fine against Mundet Cork Corp for violating an air pollution ordinance. Former Magistrate Clarence E. Kremer had levied the penalty on the Township charges, with Justices Héber Wachenfeld Burling Ackerson split on the outcome.
The court rejects the defendant's claim that the judgment lacked support in the evidence. Justices Vanderbilt Case and Oliphant join in the opinion. The township's representation was provided by Newark attorney William L. Wieser.
Mrs. Jean A. White, district clerk, said Ray mond J. Brennan has withdrawn his petition to run for the Board of Education and will not be a candidate.

A ski trooper in World War II, he later served four years as a sergeant with Patton’s Third Army in Europe. He is active in Bartholomew Church, Elizabeth and veterans groups, with wife Catherine Froseth volunteering at Girl Scout Headquarters in Elizabeth.
Steel for the Hillside school classroom addition is assured after a Washington conference. Dr Wayne Branom and Bernard Grad appealed for 60 extra tons beyond 81 needed to complete the project.
Vernon Laws of 1268 Oakwood Avenue, Sun Tube employee, said his car on the Broadway and Long Avenue company lot was rifled. Thieves took items valued at 336 dollars including a tire tube wheel sockets and misc. tools. Nat Bisk of 1470 B Liberty Avenue reported a child’s chain driven auto theft valued at 30 dollars.
After a second disastrous Elizabeth air crash, Hillside Mayor Robert C. Kirkpatrick telegrammed Governor Alfred E. Driscoll urging a veto of Newark Airport expansion. He warned the airport endangers life and property and vows to combat the menace with fellow township leaders.
Three Hillside residents aligned with the Civic Alliance announce a slate bid for the February 18 school board election. They seek equal representation, pledge mutual support, and plan a platform prioritizing fair representation while addressing stalled funds for a $1,200,000 new school building project and related bond interest.
Magistrate Birnbaum presided over a bilingual marriage ceremony for Benjamin Burstyn and Mrs. Paul Sechweiser Styrberger, both of 157 Bailey Avenue, conducted in English with German used for questions and directions. The event marked their first marriage, held on a Saturday for displaced persons.
An emergency volunteer corps was formed Sunday at Dr. William Wacker's home to direct rescue squads and coordinate ambulance use. Frederick A.
