The Planning Board will ask the Township Committee for a 5000 budget to cover engineering legal and technical advice and revised zoning maps and expenses. John M. Makine welcomed as new member with appointment official at a Township Committee meeting. The board will meet at 10 am Sunday to visit township sites and tour neighboring municipalities.
The Board of Education prepared a budget for the year starting July 1 at 1 177 146 38 down from 1 025 574 25 as new costs push the total up by 151 572. Most of the rise funds employee pay and maintenance with some savings from income deductions. The meeting will address taxation impact and other changes as Dr Wayne Branom and attorney Gilbert Chamblin presented details. William Ostermiller was named custodian of school funds with a 500 annual compensation following Harry Schnabel’s resignation.
Mrs. Caroline Major captains Hillside to meet its Community Chest quota and exceed it for the first postwar time. The Union County Park Commission gains 48 acres for Elizabeth River Parkway, promising park development near Conant Street and the Lehigh Valley Railroad.
Reservations are still available for the Progress Club Korea Night at Townleys Union next Tuesday January 15. Col Harry S Luftman program chairman says the dinner meeting will start at 7 p.m. A Fort Dix based team of 9th Infantry Division officers will present colored Korea scenes. Reservations may be made with Luftman or Alexander Mooney.
Ambulance rules on transporting contagious disease patients were debated with no decision. Dr. William Wacker to study strict rules, vehicle sterilization, and possible volunteer units. Public opinions split, five for and six against contagious transport. Health officials noted flexible rules to suit needs.
Sidney Birnbaum was sworn in as magistrate at 580 Plymouth Road by Clerk Howard J. Bloy. The event featured a gavels, pen set, and attendance by Mayor Robert C. Kirkpatrick, Ninth District Civic Association, Hillside Democratic Club, and other local figures. Birnbaum, a Democrat, succeeds Clarence E. Kremer after a New Year appointment by the Democratic majority.
Dominic Peterpaul, 29, of 1924 South Bright Street Hillside, a Buick GM packer and checker, announces his bid for the Board of Education. A Hillside resident for about 20 years, he is a veteran and secretary of the Good Government Association of New Jersey, Army Air Corps veteran, active reserve member, and former Recreation Board appointee. He is married with two children, Anthony and Victoria, and holds ties to the Hungarian Workingmen's Association and local Democratic clubs.
Township officials heard requests for budget hikes from three departments during a four hour meeting led by the Township Committee. Deputy Chief Korlesky asked for three police car replacements and one motorcycle. Fire Chief Davies sought a new firehouse, a replacement pump er from 1921 and a small pickup. Roads Overseer Riche urged truck and payloader replacements as roads struggle with trailer traffic. No figures were released. next week the committee will meet with more department heads.
The Synagogue Council of Essex County sponsors a Bonds for Israel rally on Tuesday evening January 15 at the Essex House. Benjamin Berkowitz says this is the council's first such effort. The event honors Chief Rabbi of Tel Aviv J. Unterman and invites public attendance.
A school budget proposes raising taxes by about 38 points to cover a $134,948.28 increase, with teachers’ salaries rising to $664,000 and new hires. Current expenses climb to $964,236, and capital outlay gains to $7,800. Public hearing set for January 24 following a premeeting January 14.
A 1951 law requires the School Board positions to be listed by a random drawing. The drawing will occur Friday January 25 in the office of Mrs. Jean A White, the school district clerk. Previously ballot order followed alphabetical arrangement.
The township appeals for at least 50 volunteers to reach a 175-person quota as the Red Cross bloodmobile visits Hillside Avenue School on Monday January 14 from 12 45 p m to 6 p m The effort is urged by Mayor Robert C Kirkpatrick and Raymond R King Civilian Defense Council chairman and residents are asked to contact Mrs Elizabeth Mc Craith at the control center EL 2 7800. A Hillside Safety Council meeting is announced for Thursday January 17 at 8 p m in the Municipal Building.
The Hillside Democratic Club will meet at 8:15 p.m. Monday January 14 at Hungarian Hall to name new standing committees including membership sign and publicity and ladies activities. Arthur Kies will preside. Theodore L. Enger of 44 Looker Street named estate executor and beneficiary for Nellie F. Egnor who died December 24, per Surrogate Charles A. Otto.
The township committee announced the appointment of John M. Malone to the Planning Board replacing Robert T. Kirkpatrick. Adele Branelow protested Elizabethtown Water Company plans to drill additional artesian wells south of Conant Street citing risk to local artesian supplies and industry.
