The Board of Education votes to re submit the 1961 62 budget as defeated on February 14 and sets a special election for Monday February 27 from 2 to 9 pm The two items Current Expense 1 721549 and Capital Outlay 6000 will again be presented with a potential federal match under the National Defense Education Act.
Inside Hillside politics the Hillside Republican Policy Committee backed Karl B. Ross for the Assembly slate but Charles Tracy secured the nomination. Albert Benninger wanted the county clerk post, but Henry G. Nurton stayed in place. Tracy landed the Assembly spot. Rumor hints Harry Miller may run again for Township Committee with Jack Nobje as clerk candidate. Santa display protests escalate over a T winter. Local No. 2 rejected a 12% raise to support inflation control. A Price Is Right winner from the America's Gro wers family drew IRS attention. Budget disputes over school and county taxes face township claims of underreported tax rise. The 1961 tax rate may run near 8.12.
At the annual organization meeting in the School Administration Building Hillside new board officers were chosen Peter G. Humanik ascends to president succeeding Lute Share Thomas A. Roy is the new vice president Harvey Stone and Conrad A. Cammarota join the board for three years Walter Howell fills the one year unexpired term. Committee assignments include Finance Education Buildings and Grounds Public Relations and Coordination Activities with Hillside National Bank named depository and Hillside Times as legal notices publisher. Regular meetings set for the second Wednesday at 8 p.m. with full board sessions Monday before the regular meeting.
The February Hadassah education group meeting will be held Tuesday February 28 at 3 30 pm at 235 Williamson Avenue home of Mrs Samuel Gooen. Mrs Sidney Reitman chairs and will discuss Life in the Ghetto while Mrs Aaron Soviv speaks on The Background of Modern Jewish History. Refreshments to follow during the discussion period.
Police Chief Ernest Weelk issued a warning this week that residents must obtain dog licenses. Licenses have been due since January 1 and the response has been small. The annual dog census will begin in March. noncompliance may lead to summons for court appearances.
The honorary board of the N. J. Conservatory of Music discussed two one year scholarships at North Broad Street on Monday. Bristol-Myers Co donors via Mrs. Karla Miller and local residents fund the awards, with the conservatory matching. A permanent board will be elected March 3 with attendees including Robert Diamond and Irene Philcox.
The Hillside Elks lab at 244 Hillside Avenue and Pingry School faculty homes face potential tax exempt status changes after a Board of Assessors letter to the Township Committee. The board questioned whether Pingry property could remain tax exempt if shown to generate profit.
Liberty State Bank of Hillside received a charter on Tuesday from State Banking and Insurance Commissioner Charles R. Howell. The proposed site on Liberty avenue between Herbert and Millard avenues aims to attract new depositors and serve a trade area with industrial and residential concentrations. The charter lists capital stock $200,000, surplus $200,000, organization reserve $15,000 and contingency reserve $85,000, totaling $500,000.
A trio of rock n roll socials will be held at Sinai Youth Center Holtz Auditorium Maple Avenue and Clark Street next month. The first event March 5 features Norm Stevens of WMGM Radio at 1 30 p m with March 12 and 26 also at 1 30 p m featuring recording artists. Blanche Zeller of Verona Meadow Brook Cedar Grove assists. tickets required and a free record for the first hundred attendees.
