Refrigerated Camp for Troop 99 Camps Overnight at Rutgers Ave Site
Boy Scout Troop 99 sponsored by Christ the King Church camped in a snow campsite at a vacant 385 Rutgers Avenue lot owned by Mr and Mrs Charles Yankins over the weekend under Scoutmaster Richard Zawadniak with two assistants. About 275 to 300 persons toured the site as Eagle patrol showed fire building methods, Panther patrol demonstrated campsite equipment, Wolf patrol did live first aid, Hawk patrol built a plaster model of the camp, and Senior patrol ran a short Wave set for communications. The group held an evening campfire, sang, toasted marshmallows, then slept in pup tents. Mass was held at 8:30 a.m. Sunday at Christ the King Church with a body march to and from services. Officials from Union County Boy Scouts headquarters, Elizabeth officials, township officials John Deseh and Charles Mancuso, Christ the King School nuns, police and fire department members, relatives and friends observed the event.
