A municipal budget debate presents varying figures on tax raises. Clerks and officials dispute school and county cost changes with figures ranging from a net decrease of 6 to a rise of 8 points, amid large salary increases in fire, police, and road departments.
The Hillside Ambulance Squad will present a first aid demonstration before the Hillside Democratic Club on Thursday night February 17 at 8 p.m. at Polish American Hall Bloy Street and Harvard Avenue. Participants include Captain Thomas G. Greene Assistant Captain Sol Soroka President Joseph Kelly and others. The squad recently demonstrated transportation procedures and resuscitation equipment before a first aid class at Sun Tube Corp with Soroka Kelly Gidano and Semchessen taking part.
The Board of Education and the Township Committee dispute the amount to raise for school taxes, contending a Burke press-stated figure of 38 455 68 is misleading while the deficit state aid line vanishes under new allocations. Brotherhood Week marks new school board leadership as local ambulance and police units report rapid response during a winter call to Newark Beth Israel Hospital.
Max Schleiter was chosen president of the Board of Education at the annual reorganizational meeting, with Frank J. Hill Jr reelected as vice president and new member Harlow H. Curtis to join after return from Chile. Committee appointments were announced, including Finance chaired by Lawrence Levitus and Education chaired by Joseph Ram.
The town hall committee split 3-2 to authorize air conditioning in the new municipal building at a cost of 87,300. Mayor Goldhor and Commissioners Gural and Wirston supported the move, while Commissioners Kirkpatrick and Di Buono opposed citing lack of public bids and questioned specs.

Vallera B Ringwood, candidate for the Board of Education, today thanked supporters and helpers from his recent campaign. He congratulated Mr Hill, Mr Curtis, and Mr A Chinnock on their election successes and wished them success on the board.
A plan for scout fund raising was formulated at a weeklong gathering. Attendees included Tdinet Hirschhorn Bain Lent Janek Greeters Samel Sender Marold Vordermin Semitimeter and Don Weisman.
The 1955 Heart Fund trains 5,000 volunteers for a Sunday outlying house to house drive in Union County. Volunteers will cover 15 to 20 homes per person between 2 and 4 pm carrying red heart and torch symbol and blue Heart Sunday tags. Donors receive a thank you slip and can use a not at home envelope if absent. The High School Key Club led by Edward Gallery joins the effort.
The DAV Auxiliary chapter was organized with officers including Commander Olia Myill, vice commander Madelyn Brier, chaplain Anse Babcock, trainer Vera Prokopowies, adjutant Eleanor Moynihan, and hospital chairlady Madeline Study. National and state officials led the ceremony, with Mrs Ann Loewhraohth presenting the program on Veterans Administration guidance.
The Temnence dance for the current season, sponsored by the Board of Prevention Commissioners, will be held at Hillside Avenue School gym on Saturday evening February 19 starting at 8 p.m. It ends at 11 p.m. Shanty Shack welcomes Hillside High School students and guests.
The Department of the Army promotes Col Ionry G. Nulton of 33 Beechwood Drive to Brigadier General in the Army Reserve. He has served as assistant commander to Major General Norman Schwartz at the With Division headquarters in Kearny and fought in World War II battles in Normandy and the Far East. Nulton enlisted February 15, 1916 and held roles in the Army National Guard and Organized Reserve Corps. later he was County Clerk, reelected in 1941. He and his wife have two sons, one a naval officer and another in naval aviation.
Parents of eighth graders are invited to a high school program on course offerings next September held in the school auditorium on Thursday evening February 24. Speakers include Superintendent Branom Principal Guster Vice Principal Dunham and Guidance Director Krumacher. Separately the Township voted to ban outdoor vending machines with penalties up to 200 dollars or 90 days in jail. Proponents argue service to the public while opponents say machines threaten local business and decorum.
John Galand appointed chairman to inform the Township Committee of the Liberty Ave Businessmen's Association opposition to milk vending machines. The group planned a Friday night meeting at Tobin's Appliances, drawing the largest turnout among local business people, with Stanley Peekis presenting a surprise fronted by dune decorators.
Henry Galdien, Mayor of Hillside, urges citizens to support the Elks fund drive aiding crippled children. The proclamation notes $169,500 spent by lodges statewide last year and a goal to raise more through local units and volunteers.
