Three Board of Education Members Relected Despite Weather

Inclement weather reduced turnout to about two thirds of last year as Walter Leibe Arnold McClow and Helen Kirkpatrick won reelection to three year terms by margins near two to one. Ferguson Schnabel and Miller opposed them with lower totals, districts showing shifting support and strong organization acknowledged as key to the incumbents’ victory.

New Ordinance For Police Introduced By Township Committee

The township committee introduced a police department ordinance on first reading removing the captain position and requiring high school education or equivalent for applicants. A public hearing is set for Wednesday March 8 and a salary ordinance for all municipal employees will be prepared.

Poisoning of Six Dogs Stirs Neighborhood Near Newark Line

Neighbors report the death of six dogs from arsenic poisoning over several weeks in the Liberty Avenue area near the Newark line. Police investigated a meat package found last week and tested positive for arsenic. No suspect identified. no drugstore clues found. A Saybrook PTA Ways and Means Committee showed cartoon motion pictures at Coe Avenue School auditorium, chaired by Mrs. Frank L. Foote.

Three Scouts of Troop 94 Win Religious Awards

Robert Healy, 13, of 1200 Columbia Place, a first class scout and den chief of Pack 198, won the Ad Altare Dei award at St. Theresa Church in Linden along with twenty other scouts led by Nat Gold. The ceremony featured sermons by Rev. Kozolewski, Rev. Muenzen, and Rev. Rackley. Also noted were Aleph and Ner Tamid awards presented to Michael Gold and Norman Walensky at the home of the Golds, with Michael, 14, a Star Scout in Cub Pack 198.

Military Award For Lt Col Luftman For Meritorious Service

Lt Col Marty Luftman receives a commendation from Col Henry G Nulton for organizing the first inspection team for ordinance equipment and for cutting vehicle delays by over 90 percent.
