Hillside plans a 12 point reduction in the tax rate from 5.24 to 5.12 for 1950, driven by a rise in ratables of over 3 million and a total budget of 2 083640. Municipal costs total 1 003398 with schools at 750242 and county 280000, while local revenue climbs to 778090. Public hearing is scheduled for Wednesday evening March 1.
Itillside voters will elect three members of the Board of Education for three years and vote on the school budget for the 1950 51 fiscal year at the annual meeting and election ext Tuesday February 14 from 4 to 9 pan in the various school buildings township. Voting machines will be used for the first time and results should be known one to two hours earlier than in previous elections.
The Hillside District Council of the Boy Scouts met at Coe Avenue School and decided to maintain the Boy Scout cabin on Race Street. A committee including Jerome Scher James Weston and Kenneth Trousdell was formed to inspect the cabin manage the key and inform Hillside unit leaders of activities. The group announced the National Jamboree at Valley Forge will run June 28 through July 6 and noted David Harris attended the National Scout Observance in New York City by invitation of Fred Oliver.
The Union Council of the Boy Scouts of America opened a $10 000 sustaining membership campaign to boost funding after twin budget cuts. Facing a 1957 goal to serve 80 percent more boys than in 1947 and a 23 percent 1949 membership rise, the council now serves about 6 000 Scouts and leaders under General Campaign Chairman Gilbert G. Roessner. Harold D. Steward and Howard J. Bloy are among the campaign leadership.
Republican races for mayor remain unsettled as candidates vie for a single strong nominee while a North End club revival brews. A Board of Education faction ties parochial school talk to the next election, which decides only board members and the public school budget. Major James J. Holsing’s decision not to seek reelection draws regret from supporters who praise his independent, diligent service. Veterans face delays with the Memorial Building project, urging patience until surveys by the Liberty Park group guide a prudent plan.
The Hillside Kiwanis Club was chartered at a Union dinner with 275 attendees from Hillside and allied clubs. Benjamin Hale received the charter from Frank Roch Jr. as Lt. Governor John Reynolds led ceremonies. The 36 charter members include Hillside officials Mayor James Holsing and others, with weekly Wednesday meetings announced.
Robert G. Schnabel Jr running for the Board of Education told the Hillside School Janitors Association that janitors should be treated as staff members and receive higher pay. He, with Arthur J Ferguson and Edward B Miller, pledged to push for schedule changes to allow all members to attend meetings.
John T. Gibas, 24, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joan Gibas of 1293 State Street, earned a Master of Science in chemistry during the Pennsylvania State College midyear commencement with about 800 graduates. He attended Hillside High School, class of 1943, and served in the Navy until discharge.
Ensign War s earned a Bachelor of Science degree a year ago at Franklin and Marshall College.
The Hillside Republican Club will host a candidate meeting on Monday February 13 at 8 p m in the chapel of Hillside Presbyterian Church. Candidates for the Board of Education have been invited to attend.
Bethlehem Robert Crouse Huber of 222 Conant Street is among Lehigh University students awarded degrees at the mid-year commencement. Baccalaureate degrees went to 230 seniors and 20 graduates. Dr Oliver Carmichael delivered the address and received an honorary Doctor of Laws. Huber earned the Bachelor of Arts.
Three Hillside Board of Education members seeking re election urge voters to trust their record and caution against last minute circulars from the opposition. Helen Kirkpatrick Walter Leibe and Arnold McClow stress conscientious work and service for the students and community.
Albert Schoen, a local realtor, runs as a Republican candidate for Township Committee in the spring primary. He notes he has organized support and had previously entered the race last year before withdrawing for Commissioner Raymond R. King. Schoen also was a candidate three years ago.
The Township Committee received a proposal from Thomas E. Colleton of Clinton Title & Mortgage Co on behalf of a client to build 80 apartments on the first North Avenue parcel and 50 on the opposite side. The plan was referred to the Finance Committee.
Voters decide in a district wide election next Tuesday to elect three three year board members and approve a budget of 912 459 50 for 1950 51. The budget raises 769 249 10 by local tax with 29 500 for teacher raises and 143 210 40 anticipated state aid.
