Reserve Police To Receive Americanism Award Monday

Hillside Reserve Police named recipients of the annual Americanism Award by Hillside Lodge B'nai Brith. Award ceremony Monday Feb 16 at 8 30 PM at Sinai Youth Center Hillside NJ. The unit formed 1941 as Civil Defense Black Wardens later part of Civil Defense Disaster Control. In 1969 they logged over 3800 hours aiding emergencies.

Hillside notices warn against flyby repair contracts and club events

Residents told to avoid flyby nights for home repairs while trusted area contractors offer fair prices. Local notices announce Bnai Brith Women, study groups, Atonement Guild, library hours, lectures, dinners, theater, and club events with dates in February and March 1970, plus a vandalized item list and police enforcement on street towing.

Cunningham Named Pingry Headmaster

Pingry School trustees announce H Westpott Cunningham current president of Christopher Newport College will become Pingry headmaster effective July 1 1970 He will be the eleventh headmaster succeeding Charles B Atwater who will retire by June 1971 Cunningham is a Pingry alumnus class of 1938 and earned an A B from The College of William and Mary in 1943 He previously held student leadership and athletic honors at Pingry and served as editor of the Pingry Record Continued on Page 7

Saybrook School Budget Vote Narrowly In Favor

Voters approve a 3.857 million dollar school budget and reelect three incumbents by a thin margin. Turnout was 1,448 amid rain, with incumbents Bierman Lordi and Atterman winning and challengers Leh Ber Geraci Jr. and Jerome E ben losing.

Chase Ends In Fatality In Newark Car Crash

A chase began early Sunday when Hillside Police observed a car without lights on Williamson Ave Newark. The fleeing driver Richard H Eustis 18 of Dayton St Newark collided with Raymond Boone 36 at Chancellor Ave Newark killing Boone and injuring his wife. Eustis and passenger Ronald Hill 18 suffered injuries.

Youth Arrested On Drug Charge In Westminster Raid

Detectives arrested a 16 year old boy in his Westminster home for possession of narcotics and paraphernalia. The raid was led by Sgt. Carl Beportes with detectives Gordon Milburn Anthony Messano Robert Depresso and Kenneth Lull. Officers Milburn and Messano seized hashish hashish pipes hypodermic needles marijuana and legend drugs.

Union Expert Outlines Housing Plan Steps for Seniors

Union Building Inspector Louis Giacona outlined a process to establish need for senior citizen housing. He described surveying residents, then a governing body resolution of need, possible federal or state financing, and forming a nonprofit corporation with local representation.

Seniors Respond in Housing Survey Rush

About two hundred fifty responses came in during the first ten days after the Senior Citizens Housing Advisory Committee mailed the survey to Hillside residents. The form asks marital status age income residency length and home ownership or living with children.

Lemond Is Lions Club Youth of the Month

Stanley Lemond Jr. 17 of 596 Plymouth Road is named Lions Club Youth of the Month. He serves as editor in chief of Hillside High’s Epoch yearbook and sits on the SGA Council. He co founded a Rifle Team and captains it. He writes for local papers and tutors in Newark. He plans a career in photojournalism or cinematography.
