Hillside will deploy a new direct police alarm panel with an initial 60 subscriber capacity at the police desk. The system eliminates middlemen, reduces false alarms, and will charge subscribers per level of detection, prioritizing banks and schools for hookup as bids begin. Board of Education seats were won as the budget failed and tax protests surged.

Woman Margaretta Irwin Dies From Burns At Home
Mrs. Margaretta V. Irwin, 69, of 13 Coe Ave, found dead from burns after a fire. Son John reported a Friday phone call and neighbors smelled smoke Friday night. Fire officials cite low oxygen content and careless smoking as the cause. Body taken to Haeberle and Barth Colonial Home in Union.

Scholarship Awards Equal Donations at Hillside High School
Sid Englander, president of the Hillside High School Scholarship Fund, told the Hillside Rotary Club that donations through Dec 31, 1970 totaled 333,055.60 while scholarships awarded through June 30, 1970 reached 338,795. He spoke at a Rotary meeting outlining the fund’s record and purpose.

Funeral services for Dr Willem F Wacker Jr 09 of 1224 Salem Ave follow a long illness ending Monday at Elizabeth General Hospital. He was a 40 year physician on staff at Elizabeth General and St Barbabas Medical Center, a school physician at Harden Luckett School, charter member of the local First Aid Squad, and survived by four children and a sister. Burial at Evergreen Cemetery.

Found Unconscious Youth Took To Hospital
James McDonough, 20, of 392 Sanford Ave, was found unconscious at home by his mother Mrs. Lucy McDonough and taken by municipal ambulance to SS Elizabeth Hospital at 5 p.m. Wednesday. Detectives said he was treated by doctors for being under the influence of a legend drug. He remained in the hospital for treatment.
