Examiners for the Finance Division of the State Department of Education found a long running diversion of Hillside Township school funds. From 1958 to 1964 about 174 thousand dollars were moved from school accounts to the Township of Hillside and a municipal credit union. The report urges legal review and possible recovery efforts.
The state examiners report a $54 567 gap between township and Board of Education school tax accounts as of November 30 1964 while other shortages appear limited to township funds. Officials debate voting rules and a vacant planning board seat amid a tense township committee meeting with irregular abstentions.
The Hillside Democratic Club held its Christmas party and officer election on December 16 at the College Inn. Officers elected include President Lewis Pratt and Vice President Edward Katy. The event featured a Santa visit who turned out to be Mayor Ackerman, gifting attendees.
Mr. Dominick F. Rinaldi of the United States Immigration and Naturalization Service announced that the reporting period for aliens to update their addresses is near. Forms will be available at all post offices and INS offices, and aliens are urged to comply to avoid serious consequences.
Willian Galik announces the annual March of Dimes campaign to fund birth defect research and community services. Mothers March set for Wednesday January 27 from 7 to 9 pm with volunteers and police oversight. headquarters at College of Yale Avenue. committee includes Mrs Frankly Peltman and Mrs Peggy Roche with honorary and police members.
A New Year holiday schedule will close Elizabeth postal facilities on December 25 with no carrier deliveries and limited window service. December 26 will see box pickups by mill main office and select branches only, with no general window service and only special delivery mail and perishables arriving. Township changes for 1965 include Mark Jannelli becoming Director of Civil Defense, Ackerman succeeding as Police Committee chairman, and reassignments across Public Works and Finance, with several officials to be reap-pointed.
A dense roster of students across grades from 1A to 44's outlines named seniors and underclassmen earning honor roll with numerous combinations of initials and surnames. The list includes Aminie Peyser, Caryl Nijianyshy, Michael Gurwita, Henry Hihochinan, Harvey Kugel, and many others across grades 4A to 1A.
Livingston Edison Wilson named top figures for New Jersey progress in Kiwanis sponsored contest. Winners Margie Chase Alay Kiser and Richard Lanse land, all from Hillside High School, will read essays at a College Inn dinner January 6. Judges included Dr Wayne Branom and Henry Goldhor.
National State Bank Hillside Office announced the 12th thrift essay contest judges. They include Elizabeth McGraith of Hillside Business and Professional Women's Club, Donald Gillmore PTA Presidents' Council, John G. Walsh Woman's Club of Hillside, and William R. Turner Hillside Old Guard director. Theme is Time To Save At Every Age with judging on language originality and value. Prizes: first 50 dollar U S Savings Bond, second 25 dollar bond, third 10 dollar savings account for each class.
The Baker & Taylor Co. appoints B. Dean Spain as President of the Hillside New Jersey Division and Jack D. Willis as President of the Momence Illinois operation following the death of longtime President William A. Hunter who served since 1949. Alan Hood remains VP in charge of book buying for both locations.
Hillside chapter of the Old Guard will join a driver reeducation program sponsored by New Jersey Motor Vehicle Division. Sgt Joseph Moeller outlined the four Thursday sessions at Hillside United Presbyterian Church beginning at 10:30 a.m. The program was arranged by Ben Levy.
