The 1965 Board of Education budget approves a salary plan raising teacher minimums and maximums by 200 in three degree categories. State law mandates annual 250 increments. Principals receive 450 bumps. Janitors assistants gain 200, with higher ranges for high school and elementary staff.
A local debate centers on adding a blue and white pennant bearing One Nation Under God under the national flag. Supporters cite religious liberty as core, while opponents argue it risks church state conflict and note the Supreme Court's schools prayer ruling.
A patrol car was destroyed and multiple nearby vehicles and the municipal Hillside Avenue garage were damaged in a Sunday dawn fire. Patrolman Lawrence Sadlon was fueling the car when it burst into flames. an oxygen bottle exploded, and investigators suspect a faulty pump shutoff caused gasoline to spill onto a hot exhaust. Engine Co. No. 2 battalion firefighters responded.
The Republican Policy Committee with Commissioners Vit Jr and Ram issues a Hillside statement urging good government through efficiency and economy. It pledges leadership, opposition to machine rule, and a pledge to present capable candidates "men you can trust" to restore local government to taxpayers.

Ruth Eck Strom directs the Senior choir. Morris Salmons Jr. narrates. soloists include Mrs. William Taetzsch Mrs. Brice Black and Miss Jean Hartman. pianist Mrs. Nicholas Tibbetts. Miss Rosemary Laleyee a Saint Elizabeth College sophomore chaired the first annual Leadership Conference for the New Jersey Region of the United States National Student Association at Seton Hall University on Sunday December 13. Williams US Senator spoke. Laleyee is NSA coordinator and daughter of Mr and Mrs Russell Laleyee of 848 Jerome Ave Elizabeth.
Hillside and nearby churches announce Christmas observances beginning Sunday December 20 with services on Christmas Day December 25. Calvary Lutheran Maple Ave and Clark St leads 10:30 A M worship and a 4 P M Sunday School program. candlelight at 1 P M Christmas Eve. Elizabeth Avenue Presbyterian Newark hosts multiple services starting with Youth Round Table at 9:15 A M and Candlelight at 8 P M. Hillside United Presbyterian features morning worship with choir, 3 P M school party, and 8 P M candlelight service. First Baptist Hillside advertises Bible School 9:40 A M and worship at 1 P M with a Christmas Eve service at 8 P M.

Honor County Clerk Henry G. Nulton of 33 Beechwood West celebrated a birthday and 45 years in office last Wednesday. About forty colleagues and county employees attended as Eleanor Nulton joined the gathering. A Elizabeth native and Republican, Nulton served in World War I, became a lawyer, was elected to his first five year term in 1936, and later rose to Major General commanding the 7th (Lighting) Division in New Jersey before retirement in 1962.
