Employees of General Brass and Machine Works at 25 Montgomery Street presented a $750 chunk to “Skipper,” a parent at Crippled Children’s Hospital Newark. Churches Plan Christmas Observances in Hillside Area
Churches announce Christmas weekend events with pageants, carols, and sermons. First Baptist Church led by Rev. Wesley A. Olsen features a candlelight service December 24 and a Christmas Day theme “The Christmas Story” in Sunday School lessons. Christmas music by a ladies trio and choir performances are planned. Hillside Presbyterian and Elizabeth Ave Presbyterian also hold Eve services, meditations, and special offerings, with Christmas Day worship and a Lord's Supper preparatory service on December 26. Calvary Lutheran, Rev. Morgan Wagner, stages a Christmas Eve pageant and candlelight service with a senior choir leading two anthems. Sunday services on December 26 include regular worship and a 9:45 am Sunday School.

Men Held for Grand Jury in Newark Dice Game
Nineteen men arrested December 1 at the Lionel Corp plant 28 Lager Place were held for the Grand Jury by Acting Magistrate Percy H. Penn. The Disorderly Persons Act charge was amended under the Gaming Act. Police testified they did not see a game but information indicated one. Five dice were found with Frank Petrillo and $925 with Henry Misczuk, who claimed most was owed to a loan. Defense attorneys argued the State failed to prove a dice game and asked for a reserve on decision.

Janitors Seek Higher Pay in School Salary Review
The Public Schools Janitors Association asked the Board of Education last Wednesday for salary increases. The committee chair Dominick Gianforte proposed minimum raises from 2800 to 3500 for janitors and 2200 to 3000 for making staff, with maximums rising to 4400 to 8500 for janitors and 4700 to 5300 for maintenance. The plan also seeks 100 to 800 dollar ranges in annual increments and hospital benefits, medical and surgical coverage, plus car expense allotment for maintenance staff.
