Joe Franklin will emcee the Eastern Union County Junior Miss Pageant at Hillside High School on Liberty Ave. December 12 1970 at 7 30 p m. Brown Named To State Old Guard Post

David Brown of Hillside was named to the state executive council of the Old Guard, the first Hillsider to receive the honor, announced during the unveiling of a 40th anniversary plaque at Old Guard headquarters. A luncheon followed at Chantclair Restaurant, with Robert D. Lilley of AT and T as guest speaker. The local chapter plans a December 16 Christmas party at United Presbyterian Church, Coe and Salem.

Hillside Week G O P Meet At College Inn

Hillside Republican Club schedules its Thursday December 10 meeting at the College Inn with officer election for 1971 after the regular business. Police log includes multiple break ins thefts and damages in Newark and Irvington areas with stolen watches rings batteries and damage to vehicles and property.

Lehner Enters Education Race for Hillside Board

Gary D. Lehner announces his candidacy for the Hillside Board of Education. A Hillside native and youth advocate, he cites close ties to local children, a door to door campaign, and a platform aimed at uniting the school board and community to improve educational and recreational opportunities. He notes past involvement with Little League, Babe Ruth, Pop Warner, and coaching across Hillside schools.

Explosion Rocks Linden Bayway Plant Sparking Windows

A blast at Humble Oil Bayway plant shattered windows in Linden and nearby towns. Hillside reported light damage and no looting as police and fire crews responded. Several Maple and Liberty Ave businesses were damaged. seven civilian defense aux police aided scene security the following day.

Ferrigno Enters Race For Board

Peter A. Ferrigno 44 of 1443 Maple Avenue announced his candidacy for Hillside Board of Education. A WWII Air Force veteran and former Hillside athlete, he rose to Deputy Chief of the Hillside Fire Department in 1965. He seeks to use his fire science training and community service to guide decisions impacting Hillside children.
