Hillside Week Fire and Theft Roundup

A string of local incidents includes kitchen and brush fires at homes on Mann Avenue and 1460 Stanley Terrace, a car and bicycle thefts on Summit and Bailey avenues, a dog bite case at 1416 North Broad Street, several arrests on warrants, and disappearances or runaway youth reports. Fire crews also tackled a car fire near Chestnut and Ramsey, and a faulty cord sparked smoke at 286 Florence Avenue.

G.O.P. Opens Headquarters in Hillside

The Hillside Republican Municipal Committee will open its campaign headquarters at 1300 Liberty Ave Hill side on Thursday September 4 at 7 30 P M. Chairman E Jonathan Bell says candidates Joseph T Loeb and Dominick F Aiello will greet attendees along with county officials seeking re election to Union County Board of Freeholder and New Jersey Assembly. Also attending will a representative from Governor Cahill s campaign committee and Union County Republican Chairman Richard G Schoel. Refreshments door prizes and entertainment are planned.

Thieves Enter But Don’t Steal at Hillsite Avenue Hospital

Thieves entered the New Jersey Manufacturers Hospital at 401 Hillsite Ave at 5:50 a.m. today, gaining access by pushing open a ventilator from the roof into the ladies’ room. No items were stolen. Police report the ransack yielded no losses.

Hillside Firm Named To Automate Mail Load

The US Post Office Depart ment plans a research program to speed up mail traffic, predicting 80 billion pieces annually in 25 years. Plessey Inc. is contracted for equipment to automate mail handling, including sorting canceling and storing, with installations in Australia England and New Zealand prior to a US test. The system sorts mail by code via a windowed stage where staff enter a zip derived code, enabling high speed conveyors to route pieces to outgoing locations.

Truck Driver Killed on Route 22 in Indiana

An Indiana truck driver was struck and killed on Route 22 near Liberty Ave overpass as a car failed to stop. Edward N. Stiso Jr., 26, of Springfield Ave., Springfield, was chased to Route 22 near Morris Ave, Union, arrested for causing death by motor vehicle and leaving the scene. Carroll A. Cole, 45, of Parkside Ave., Lawrenceburg, Ind., was killed while possibly exiting his tractor trailer.

Murder Weapon Found Tied to Bayway Bank HoldUp

A rifle linked to the Bayway Branch of the National State Bank holdup in Elizabeth was found Monday in a hedge on Wilder Street. The Aug 8 getaway car was abandoned nearby. George Paszkowski, 26, of Cornwall Heights Pennsylvania, a correction officer at the New Jersey State Reformatory in Yardville, was slain during the robbery at 920 South Elmora Avenue.

Hillside Forms Youth Advisory Council Led by Baldasano

Hillside Mayor Alexander J. Menza announced the creation of the Hillside Youth Advisory Council to advise the Mayor and Township Committee on youth issues. The group will include at least fifteen Hillside teens and interested adults, meet with the Recreation Department and Town­ship Committee, and seek youth input on recreation, libraries, and a proposed youth center at the P A L Building. Vincent Baldasano, Hillside High School teacher, is named chair to organize the council and ensure teen representation. Interested adults should contact the Township Clerk.

Three Men Arrested At Bloy Street Gas Station

Off duty Patrolmen Miller and Cann arrested Michael Montague 28 of Plainfield Joseph Belin 23 of Scotch Plains and William Jester 26 of Plainfield at 2723 a m on August 20 at a Route 22 Bloy Street gasoline station for possession of a dangerous weapon loitering and disturbance. A knife and loaded 22 caliber pistol were found in the vehicle. No bail was set.

Steaks Stolen From Pathmark Arrest On N Broad St

Clarence R. Holt a 19 year old of 317 West Runyon Newark and a Newark boy were nabbed Wednesday at the Newark Hillside line on North Broad Street with four steaks valued at 6.14 taken from Pathmark Store 1303 North Broad Street. Holt held for 100 dollar bail while the juvenile was released to family pending juvenile court action. Officers were Patrolman John Maddalena and John Yeachsein.

Senior Citizens Housing Group To Meet Sept 3

Study Finds Hillside Voters Split on Registration

New Jersey Eagleton Institute estimates for Hillside show a population of 23550 with 12436 registered and 295 unregistered. Blydenburgh says over 1.25 million unregistered voters exist in the state amid a low participation rate, as the report becomes the first comprehensive county municipal tallies.
