Hillside public schools will open for the regular term on Thursday September 4. New pupils must register August 27 from 9 00 a.m. to 12 00 noon to prepare schedules. Orientation for ninth graders and new high school students is September 3 at 9 00 a.m. in the high school auditorium.
A car owned by Martin Ryan of 957 Stuyvesant Ave Irvington burned at 11 18 p m near the Shell Station Route 22 at Bloy St. Police logged a battery theft from Robert Goldberg at 1 37 p m last Tuesday valued at 25 dollars. Rosalind Shapiro was helped to enter her home after locking out last Tuesday. A 24 inch bicycle valued at 50 dollars was stolen from Woodruff Area of Elizabeth River Park at 2 55 p m last Tuesday. License plates were reported stolen from a Toyota at 1477 N Broad St by Robert Hannon at 4 15 p m last Tuesday.
A list of brief city incidents includes an automotive fire at 1312 Liberty Ave with extinguishment about 10:20 p.m. last Tuesday, gutters stolen from 1290 Liberty Ave, and a gas station robbery near Hess on N Broad St. A larceny charge is noted for Albert Shaw at East Orange Police Headquarters. Other items include a stolen car report for John Puhak and missing rings at 1480 Highland Ave. Firefighters also investigated a smoky television at 1550 Oakwood Ave. and a missing bicycle report for Frank Congalesi.
At the July 22 gathering Mayor Menza and township committeemen reported on municipal affairs. A special voters registration committee was named with members Norton Parsonnet Diamond Mandy Gold en Metzger DiLorenzo Baldasano Casale Bartolotta. The August 26 meeting will feature a New York travel film, with refreshments and public invites.
Union County Freeholder Don ald C. Dunne is set to address the Elizabeth Area Young Republicans at 8:00 P.M. on Wednesday August 27 in the College Inn Hillside. The event marks the campaign kickoff for Hillside Township Committee candidates Joseph Loeb and Dominick Aiello.
Robert Lipson former Hillside Lodge 1514 B nai B rith president and current B n ai B rith regional director for south Jersey and the Philadelphia area will be saluted at a testimonial dinner and farewell party on October 9 at Maplewood Manor Maplewood. Co chairmen are Saul Schreier Robert Diamond and Donald Myers with Benjamin Shachat of 248 Reynolds Ter Orange handling ticket distribution.
After a three hour meeting, the loitering ordinance was adopted 3 to 1 with Mayor Menza voting no and Commissioner Ferrigno absent. The measure targets youths under 18, with parents liable on second offenses within 30 days and penalties up to 200 dollars or 30 days jail. The town plans a Youth Center and a fifteen member Youth Council to boost activities.
The Hillside High School vice-principal post will be filled at a special Aug 27 Board meeting as Dr. Avella becomes superintendent and Kulikowski steps to principal. The district approved in service training for teachers and discussed class offerings and radio-education plans.
Hospital Chief Harry G. Milne of the U S Naval Reserve spoke to the Hillside Rotary Club about the six year enlistment program. He outlined entry exams, monthly drills, and varied duties, and showed a film The American Dreadnought about the reactivation of the battleship and its World War II and Vietnam service.
Police investigated a stolen vehicle on Bailey Avenue at Maple Avenue. The car, owned by U Haul Co in Atlanta, Georgia, had been rented to Aubray Foster of 129 Chancellor. No injuries reported as the driver fled the scene.
Elizabeth resident complains of dizziness and headaches after a two car crash at 12220 Jam today on Hollywood Ave near Salem Ave. Police report the Levine vehicle collided with a car driven by Richard E. Kleiman 19 of 377 Hollywood Ave. Mrs Levine declined medical attention, saying she would see her own doctor.
