Proponents cite tax gains and location near the railroad, but residents argue zoning south of Conant Street should stay Residence A. They warn a change risks multi family housing, erosion of neighborhood character, and potential industrial expansion in Hillside.
A special board meeting August 21 will discuss rezoning land south of Conant street and west of the Lehigh Valley Railroad to industrial use for Air Reduction Inc. nearby schools, traffic, and facilities. The board also approved bond plans for 27 years totaling $150,000 and addressed library janitorial complaints, facility land studies, and teacher workshops.
Township Committee debates a rezoning to industrial use for 35 acres between Conant street and the Elizabeth River. Mayor Helsing plans a notarized No vote but cannot alter a potential two-two split. Residents fear wider industrial expansion and a shift in street-frontage zoning, while supporters credit Evans for bringing industry to Hillside.
The Township Committee reversed its stance on the Conant Street rezoning proposal. Commissioner King said he and Commissioner Hale would vote against the ordinance at the Wednesday public hearing after consulting with opponents. Oneil concurred and criticized local press coverage while noting the Air Reduction plant was not a chemical factory and no fault found with its operations.

Evans hillside contractor faces scrutiny as Township Committee plans to rezone land south of Conant Street and west of the Lehigh Valley Railroad from Residence A and C to industrial. He bought 5 acres believing rezoning would occur before the public hearing, a move critics say bypassed normal process and left him at risk if the ordinance fails.
Mundet Cork Corp reports it has spent 20000 dollars on experimental devices to reduce dust and odor from its plant and expects fruit in four to six months. The township committee gave 30 days to act or face fines. Other items include zoning actions for Liberty House Apartments and a duplex permit for Albert Schoen Inc. pending a conference next month. A curb ordinance for Summit avenue was requested by residents.
Miss Carrie Dortenwald of 5 Hilldale Place, 75, was reported in good condition at St Elizabeth's Hospital Elizabeth after infantile paralysis. She is one of the oldest known victims, with the acute stage leaving no paralysis before admission to the contagion pavilion last Wednesday.
Mayor James J. Holsing will be out of town for the August 23 public hearing and will file a notarized letter with Township Clerk Howard J. Bloy recording his vote against the rezoning ordinance south of Conant Street and west of the Lehigh Valley Railroad. Commissioner John M. Brown already cast the sole No vote at the introduction and is expected to repeat it at the hearing.
Liberty Avenue business leaders petitioned the Township Committee to remedy flood conditions after heavy rain last month. The request was sent to the township engineer for investigation and report.

James D. Duffy narrowly wins the Republican County Committee nomination for tax collector 13 to 12 at the Elks Club Hillside Avenue over Raymond R. King. Duffy, a Hillside recreation board member and former Army security corporal, has ties to local politics and business. The nomination follows the death vacancy of Arthur L. Theurer with Democrats to announce soon and independents eligible to file 40 days before November vote.
A rapid police and fire response on Route 29 near the Newark line aided Donald Freidberg a 66 year old New Yorker who suffered a heart attack while riding in a car with his son Sydney and Sidney Augstein. Police Patrolmen Frank McGhee and Raymond Heller arrived with Fire Company 8 led by Captain Harold Kirkman. Doctors Milton M. Lilien and Charles Grubin assisted as an ambulance later drove Freidberg home.
