Mrs Mae Swanger, Progressive candidate for Hillside Township Committee, withdraws to endorse Democratic nominees Milton B. Conford and Robert G. Kirkpatrick. She cites unity on schools and civic cooperation as the basis for the move to support Democratic unity in local government.
Liberty Park residents and the South Hillside community oppose plans to rezone land south of Conant Street and west of the Lehigh Valley Railroad from residential to business or heavy industry to host a Air Reduction Company plant. They warn such development would ruin park-area value and urge finding space in existing industrial zones instead. They call for vigilance against encroachment and stress the need to preserve Hillside’s finest residential neighborhoods.
State Civil Defense in Trenton sets a countywide evacuee quota of 32843 across 20 Union County towns. Hillside is allotted 1856 evacuees as the fifth highest quota, with churches and schools named as potential refugee shelters. Dreyfuss stresses planning for rapid mass movement and readiness to shelter in neighboring areas if needed.
Fourteen children from Belleview terrace organized an Infantile Paralysis fundraiser. They collected 8.25 dollars, ran a raffle for a perfume bottle donated by Saul Richman, and sold magazines and other items seized from homes. Participants included Annette and Arnold Richman, Natalie Hillman, Harriet Hillman, Roger Hillman, Barry Rohrbach, Rhoda Mittleman, John Mittleman, Bobby Pinnas, Michael Goodman, Howard Goodman, Andy Pack, Steven Chanin, and Norman Chanin.
Wilbur W. Willms of Hillside serves a second term as Adjutant for Harden-Looker Post No. 50, American Legion. A Newark native born October 18 1916 he volunteered for the Army in 1940 and served in India with the 848th Engineers earning a commission as 1st Lieutenant before leaving the service December 5 1945. He is married to Helen Boiko since January 17 1942, has a son Walter born seven days before he left for overseas, and works as a machinist for Linker Machines Inc. of Newark.
The Veterans Central Committee urged the Hillside Township Committee to plan a war memorial for the proposed Hillside civic center and to obtain a legal opinion on powers. Leslie Reed said the Ambulance Fund has $3700 of a $7500 goal and asked for deficit relief before buying an ambulance. The panel also authorized buying an American Le France aerial rack for 27000 and a lot on Winans Avenue for 1750 to extend Clinton Place.
Police allege a 24 year old Marion Stanek of Newark and 30 year old John Costello of Irvington drove to G A Brown Company trailer dealers on Route 29 and vaulted a 6 foot fence to look at trucks. Witness Richard Zank reported the incident and police issued summonses for both men on orderly conduct charges. They appeared in Magistrate's Court on Saturday.
Union County Band and Orchestra School at Roselle held concerts last Thursday in Abraham Clark High School auditorium. Band One led by Joseph M. Checchio included Ruth Ann Paul, Flute. Robert Sherwood. Gerald Weiss. Donald Meslay on trumpet. Band Two directed by Randall Bellerjeau included Paul Cohen, Edward Guiles on clarinet and James Dill on trumpet.
Magistrate Clarence E. Kremer imposes a 60 day suspended sentence on Fred Smith for stealing $85 worth of women's wearing apparel from a storeroom at 160 Grumman avenue. The owner, who hires Smith as a handyman, did not press charges. The clothing belonged to Harry Newman and Martin Kreinerman of the Grumman address. Nicola Stancheff funeral held tomorrow at Growney Funeral Home for Nicola Stancheff of 75 Route 29. He died after a two week illness at 62 years. He lived in Hillside six years after moving from Irvington. Survivors include his wife Theresa Hauser Stancheff, three daughters, one son, and three grandchildren.
Giants and a group of All Star collegiate players will play an exhibition at Newark Schools Stadium on Sunday September 10. Proceeds go to the Essex County Veterans of Foreign Wars Blood Bank Program at Beth Israel Hospital in Newark. Several Giants stars including Conerly Swiacki Tidwell DeRogatis and White are slated to participate. Tickets available at the Post rooms Bloy street car Rutgers avenue.
The forecast notes cloudy conditions today with scattered showers and a subsequent warm, fair day tomorrow. Temperatures are expected to rise as the week progresses.
A Republican County Committee special meeting is scheduled for Thursday at 244 Hillside Avenue to select a candidate for tax collector, following the death of Arthur To. The plan to rezone Conant Street area for Airco Equipment Division aims to build a 360 by 650 foot plant employing about 600 people, with 22 acres for the plant and 13 for housing. Residents fear blight and safety hazards, and the hearing will be held August 23 at Abram P. Morris School.
An unidentified veteran gave $50 to Mrs. June Dyer at 533 Leo Street renewing hope she may recover the $200 purse lost Friday in Penn Station Newark. Dyer and her children Frank and Joyce had just arrived from Tampa as her husband Francis is recalled for Marine duty. She suspects the loss occurred in a telephone booth at the station and says the donor advised giving any found money to the Salvation Army.
Eight year old Myron Galanty, son of Mr and Mrs Harold E Galanty, suffered a cut on the left hand and facial contusions when he ran into a car at the Conklin and Summit avenues intersection. The accident involved two cars and the child was treated and released by Dr Joseph Peyser.
Thirty six Rutgers College of Pharmacy students earned Dean's List honors for the second semester of 1949 1950, announced by Dean Thomas D Rowe. The recipients include seven seniors nine juniors twelve sophomores and eight freshmen with nominees such as Bernard Gecker of 1525 Gompton terrace Hillside New Jersey.
Ira M. Reich son of Dr and Mrs Jerome J Reich of 1500 North Proad Street will become bar mitzvah Saturday morning August 12 during the first service in the remodeled Sinai Congregation building 1531 Maple Avenue. The structure is not entirely completed but ready for the service.
William Yuill, longtime Hillside resident and former justice of the peace, will be honored Saturday with an open house at his granddaughter’s home 56 Burnside Avenue Cranford. He lives with grandson Ethan Allan Yuill of the Fire Department.
Exalted Ruler George K. Foley of Hillside Lodge 1591 BPOE returned from the national convention in Miami with a certificate of merit for youth activities. Hillside Lodge was the only New Jersey recipient among 863 lodges. 24 certificates were awarded. Its youth program includes a Junior baseball league and a Hillside High School football dinner. William N. Robin has chaired the program for three years.
The will of the late Harry B. Fredrickson of 1213 South Long avenue, who died July 12, was offered for probate with Surrogate Charles A. Otto, Sr., by his widow Nellie Fredrickson, the executrix and legatee.
