Hillside Little League Preseason Parade Set for Saturday
The Hillside Little League announces its 24th annual preseason parade for Saturday April 23 beginning 9 15 a m from George Washington School ground. The procession travels Winas Avenue Liberty Avenue Ryan Street Gard Avenue to Little League Stadium with participants including Hillside High School marching band color guard Crawford Drum and Bugle Corps Brownie Troops Ambulance Squad Civil Defense Lions Elks Knights of Columbus Jaycees Italian American Civic Association and Little League officials. Speakers include Mayor Vincent Baldassano and District 9 Little League representative Max Deutch. Paul Stein to toss the first ball signaling the season start. Major League sponsors are Lions Italian American Civic Association Rotary Knights of Columbus B nao B rith Hillside Elks. Minor League sponsors include Kelly Salles Hillside Pharmacy Union Plate Glass Hedy s Diner Carl s Lunch John DeGeorge Jewelers Franklin State Bank and Menza Realty. Two 4 team leagues will host 120 players in Major League play at Gard Avenue Central Avenue Conant Street and Calvin Coolidge fields on weeknights.

The township secures a $40 500 Green Acre grant for upgrading the George P Dover Recreation area between Race and Vine Streets. Hillside will match to reach $81 000 for two tennis courts two paddle courts lighting and landscaping with work set to start this summer and finish by fall.

Growney Finishes Boston Marathon In Three Hours Thirty Six
Marathon competitor Growney, finishing behind winner Jerome Drayton in 2 14, completes the gruelling 26 mile race in 3 36. His run, sponsored by area Rotary Clubs, is expected to raise 5 000 to 7 000 for the Rotary Foundation supporting education scholarships and an overseas student exchange. Township to discuss Pingry campus acquisition with Hillside BOE

Montclair Barber Shop Chorus announces April 29 and 30 performances at Montclair High School. Frank Szente of Florence Avenue directs the 75 voice group while Terry Benesh of Puree Street sings lead. The chorus earned a Fifth Place medal at the San Francisco international competition last July.

Town approves sign limits and adds new ordinances
The Township Committee passed a 4 1 vote restricting signs on residential property to 10 by 4 inches with no realtor names and a single sign per property.
