Valenti Attends New Jersey School Board Conference

Jack Valenti, Hillside, a member of the Board of Education, joined 32 newly elected New Jersey school board members at a three day conference in Harriman New York on the Arden House campus run by Teachers College Columbia University. The event covered fundamentals of school board membership with sessions on problems, decision making, and influences. Valenti plans to report back and urge adoption of recommendations.

Boy Recovers After Auto Collision Near Home

Gregory Storch six of 523 Yale avenue was struck by a car Friday near his home. The vehicle driven by Louis Gengo of 81 Madison avenue Irvington struck the fender as the toy darted into the street. He is improving after treatment by Dr Joseph Peyser and transfer to Newark Beth Israel Hospital.

Air Force appoints former resident Joseph Aromando as chief inspector

Joseph H. Aromando, former Hillside High pupil, named chief supervisor of the synthetic instrument trainer section at McGuire Air Force Base Fort Dix. He supervised seven instructors training over 200 pilots monthly and served four years in the Air Force starting in 1952. He is married to Concetta Mauriello and resides in Mt. Holly with two children.

Honor Volunteers At Vets Hospital

Dr. M Herbert Fineberg announced the seventh annual awards honoring volunteers at the Veterans Administration Hospital in East Orange. Five hundred eighty five volunteers were praised for aiding rehabilitation and home return, with certificates for service hours including 5000 hours by Eleanor Kilner and 100 hours by Anna Miltner.

Hillside Maintains Low Tax Rates Despite Increase in County

Tax figures from the Union County Board of Taxation show Hillside at 7.58, still among the county’s lowest. Roselle and Roselle Park lowered rates, while Springfield 5.53 Linden 6.47 Summit 6.56 exceed Hillside. In politics, U.S. Senator Clifford Case won renomination over Robert Morris, with Hillside voting 1,613 for Di Buono in mayoral race, Dunn winning county nomination, and Glassner’s strong but state-wide loss to Lord.

Parents Night Of Junior Sportsmen Held By Hillside Club

The Hillside Junior Sportsmen Club with Hillside Recreation Commission hosts a parents night at Harden Locker School auditorium on Monday evening April 25. Boys will display fishing lures and gear made during meetings. Union County sportsmen donate tackle for the boys. Mop-Up Begins April 23 For 1960 Census

The 1960 Census of Population and Housing moves into its mop-up phase on April 23. A selected group of interviewers will visit households to collect the blue census forms left at every fourth address. Some residents have not mailed their reports. officials urge completion and submission to the district office.

Representatives of the Conservative Congregation of Hillside will attend the Northern New Jersey Region conference of the United Synagogue of America Sunday, April 24 at Temple Emanuel in Paterson.
