Gunmen held up Hill side Cut Rate Store at 1401 Maple Ave Tuesday night at 8 06 p m escaping with 90 dollars. Owner Irving Prince and his wife Rose were inside when the robbers ordered silence for five minutes then tore out the telephone.
Fire Commissioner Monroe Ackerman will not seek re election in November. Democrats endorsed Joseph L. Ram for their June 6 primary, aiming to retain total control of the township committee. Ram previously left the Democrats to run as a Republican in 1963 and was later elected with Anton A. Vit Jr. Continued on Page 4.
Hillside officials discuss Shomre Temple production with Comm. Diamond while noting rehearsals. Elsewhere a girl’s glasses were stolen near Hillside Ave School, a purse taken on Highland Ave, and four bikes seized from juveniles at the Hillside Public Library. A railroad incident near Irvington and a tunnel light vandalism report also appear, with fire crews responding to a Mack Co. garage blaze. Police recovered a stolen 1957 car on Wilder Street.
The opening of the Central Avenue Overpass to N Broad Street and the closing of Long Avenue grade crossing on the Lehigh Valley Railroad raise traffic load at Central Ave and Conant Street. Conant Street is crowded in rush hours and city planners urge a traffic light to prevent a present hazard from intensifying. The Township Committee earned State approval to widen the Conant Street bridge to improve flow, and a signal should be installed soon to avert tragedy.
Police rerouted traffic for four hours after a tractor trailer crashed into a flatbed truck in Weequahic Park Newark. Nicholas Rangne 42 of Philadelphia was trapped in the cab and freed with torches saws and equipment. The Crown Paper Board Inc. tractor trailer struck Rudy Stepina 50 of New York City driving the flatbed loaded with large cast iron forms. Traffic diverted from the highway at the Hilldale Overpass into Hillside Ave.
Word from Major Clifford D. Victorine Jr admissions officer at West Point says cadet Bill Schutsky of Hillside has been granted permission to attend the Father and Son's basketball banquet for the Hillside Comet basketball team. The event will be held Tuesday evening at Maplewood Manor.
The Township Committee voted to file with the State Board of Public Utility Commissioners to force Public Service Transport to restore extended service on the number 10 bus. The action responds to a cut in Hollywood Ave service via the Central Ave Overpass after Long Ave closure. Mayor Ferrigno will meet PST officials April 19 to press for broader Hillside service.
Fire Chief Carmen R. Dill Sr announces Hillside Fire Dept will expand its Home Inspection Program to include one family dwellings. Trained inspectors will assess hazards on request, aiming to improve home fire safety. Spring inspections begin April 10 with door knob play cards providing contact info.
Township committee announced a $38,000 Green Acres grant for Maple Ave land adjacent to Hillside school to develop recreation and playground while a remaining $38,000 plus half the development cost is hoped from Open Sky and federal funds. Optimism remains as tentative federal approval exists and work aims to start next fall.
Abe Cohn a well known sports official and former professional ballplayer was named to Hillside Recreation Board for a five year term replacing Eleanor Salzman whose tenure expired. Officials praised his long work on playgrounds and 25 years with Newark Recreation Dept and endorsed his strong contribution to the local program. Mayor Ferrigno ordered thanks to Salzman for her five years on the board.
Lous Moss announces a 5¢ per gallon donation from two Esso stations on Route 22 Hillside. Gas sold Sunday April 9 will be included in the gift to Hillside Lodge B'nai B'rith. Stations are at Route 22 Westbound Doremus Place and eastbound Route 22 Harding Terrace.
Traffic on the Central Ave Overpass opened with a new traffic light system to regulate inbound flow to N Broad St from Central Ave and Evans Terminal Road. Delays occurred due to a westerly light outage and a Newark truck incident rerouted traffic. A pedestrian tunnel and gates will enable fire and police vehicle crossing at the Lehigh Valley crossing.
