Township committee increases the real estate tax rate to 7.43 per hundred to fund a 58,665 boost for the Board of Education for the first half of the fiscal year starting July 1. Commissioners Corwick and Share oppose. Diamond and Dismond weigh legality and fiscal-year impacts.
Commissioner Marvin Corwick favors a fifty fifty allocation method. He notes shifting the school fiscal calendar to a calendar year would recover $200. The proposed plan spreads funding over July December and January June, totaling $2,000 for each year.
The Zoning Board of Adjustment will hear Joseph R Kane on behalf of Kelbey Associates for subdivision of 15 lots to build 12 two family homes, seven on a new cul de sac off N Broad St and four on King St, with three one family homes on Roanoke Ave. Previous appeals upheld a township denial of an apartment plan. The board also reviews Thurp's Tavern addition and several variance requests for undersized lots and rezoning actions.
Norman Forer was chosen chairman of the Board of Recreation Commissioners at a reorganization meeting on Monday night. He has served since January 1, 1965 and helped found Hillside Little League in 1954. Vice chairmen are Jack Schulman and J Donald Tresente. Peter G. Humanik reelected secretary for his 19th year.
The Hillside Township Committee debated an $59,000 Board of Ed request amid a hall temperature of 82 degrees as residents questioned energy costs and shutoff access. The Hillside Pool Commission planned April 10 interviews for lifeguards at 8 00 p m. Applicants must be 18 plus with proper qualifications. Nicholas Reale won first prize in the Westfield Art Association show with View From Above displayed at Union College. Hillside schools closed at noon in Eisenhower tribute and will recess for Easter with classes resuming April 14. Ronald Flamm reported his car stolen from his Highland Avenue home Friday.
Hillside officials hear a plea from David M. Brown to create a low rent elderly housing project with possible federal support. They note past local votes against similar plans and compare with Irvington and Union projects. The meeting also approved $19,590 Hillside share for a new Arthur Kill secondary treatment plant and outlined plans to upgrade Sanford play area and fence Desch Park with new entrances.
At the Hill side Democratic Club meeting at the College Inn the men plan second terms Mayor Alexander Menza and Public Works Commissioner J Late Share were confirmed as candidates for reelection. Share served as mayor in 1968 and as Police Commissioner previously. Dinner dance chair Charles Mancuso announced April 12 as the event date and new members were welcomed including Diana Casale Steven Kowitski Malcolm Kilbride Marie Tiness and others. The next meeting is set for April 22 at the College Inn.
Hillside churches announce four day Resurrection observance starting Maundy Thursday with Good Friday united service at Faith Assembly of God 383 Yale Avenue. Easter services at 9:00 and 10:30 a.m. feature two identical mornings with choirs and special music.
Donna Marie Abate of Hillside will appear on the Ted Mack Amateur Hour on Sunday April 13. A Harden-Locker sixth grader and longtime performer she has sung in multiple languages and appeared on Channel 47. She studies music with Mary Ann Gerbino and is active in charity events.
Calvary Lutheran Church announces Holy Week services led by Pastor C Morgan Wagner. Two communion services will be held. Holy Thursday features a combined communion, confirmation, and reception of members at 8:00 p.m. The schedule continues with additional services across four local Protestant churches.
