Maryland Terrapins chase solace after a rough week as they overpower NC State 21 6 in Raleigh College football. The win ends NC State’s ACC unbeaten streak and marks a strong response following a 34-0 loss to Wake Forest.
The Terrapins built a 21 0 lead at Riddick Stadium before State’s third string scored late. Forbes opened scoring with a 4 yard run, then a 71 yard screen burst for Maryland. Maryland QB Bob Ruseviyan added a final 1 yard TD as State’s reserves found a late score. Randy Harrell sparked one Wolfpack drive with a 15 yard reception after an interception.
NC State coach Earle Edwards said he was disappointed but not surprised after a 21-6 ACC defeat at Maryland. He cited different opponents and mistakes by Claude Gibson as key factors, while Maryland coach Tommy Mont praised a team effort and noted State’s fast backs.
North Carolina State College sophomore halfback Jim D Antonio 199 pounds broke his ankle in Saturdays game against Maryland and will miss the rest of the season. Maryland defeated NC State 21 to 6. Coach Earle Edwards had picked D Antonio as the likely successor to All America Dick Christy.
Clemson edge North Carolina 26-21 as Lowndes Shingler and Doug Cline spark a late rally. The Tigers trailed 21-20 with under three minutes left before a three-yard Usry TD run and a failed extra point sealed the ACC showdown in Clemson, S.C.
Clemson takes early lead with two 80 yard drives finishing in Cline and Coker touchdowns. UNC ties late, but Clemson regains on a 3rd period plunge, then UNC retakes with a 1 yard Coker TD and Blazer PAT. Virginia upsets Duke 15-12 as Whitley passes guide Cavaliers.
Clemson defeats North Carolina 26 to 21 behind a second unit offense and a spread formation that troubled the Tar Heels. Coach Frank Howard notches win number 100 praising depth and fresh legs while Jim Tatum lauds Clemson tackles and UNC pass defense.
Wake Forest 13 Virginia Tech 6 as Neil MacLean scores 12 points on a touchdown and extra point and Dan Herring recovers a key fumble. Tech misses early chances under 50 mph winds. MacLean runs 30 carries for 126 yards while Alger Pugh fumbles and Billy Holsclaw connects on a 44 yard pass for Tech.
