Nevada Nuclear Test Seen From Las Vegas Area

The explosion occurred 90 miles from Las Vegas with a device about 10 kilotons. The test, floated 1,500 feet on a balloon, produced a bright flash and strong shock wave felt by observers around a hill ten miles away. Forecasters warned of fallout carried by light winds.

Helene Wounds North Carolina Coast In Erratic Pass

Hurricane Helene battered North Carolina seashores with 140 mph winds and heavy rain, causing widespread roof damage to cottages at Wrightsville Kure and Carolina Beach and destroying a 300 foot Ocean Isle pier.
