Edenton Had Bad Reputation Back In Colonial Days
Edenton in colonial times earned a bad report from an early Virginia official. A letter found by Richard Dillard Dixon, dated about 236 years ago, described the town then called Queen Anne's Creek as a haven for pirates, runaways, and illegal traders. It claimed no settled government and noted a swift frigate driven ashore, robbed, and fired upon by locals, with the chief offender banished.
