Yugoslav irregulars push into Italy from the border and strike Trieste while threatening Fiume. Partisan bands, reportedly under Tito, operate along the Adriatic coast from Susak to Split, with clashes across a 400 mile eastern Adriatic front and coordination attempts with Mihailovic forces.
Allied artillery struck the Japanese base at Finschhafen New Guinea as Australians landed six miles north of the beachhead. Bombers dropped 21 tons of explosives and attack planes fired 48 000 rounds while enemy aerial activity was held off by U S anti air defenses. Japanese bombers attacked later as ships withdrew.
Washington. Four preliminary steps were taken in Congress to enable several million armed services members to vote in the 1944 state primaries and the Presidential election. Senator Green announced he asked War Secretary Stimson and Navy Secretary Knox for their views on a plan for a simplified V mail ballot. He would hold hearings once statements are received. House Elections Committee Chairman Worley said similar hearings would be held before the March primaries. Anticipating practical difficulties, lawmakers noted varying state laws and the global distribution of ballots. Senator Hatch said both parties agree to do everything to let every eligible service member vote.
Jacksonville, Fla. Sept 24. About half the normal crew reported for the grave yard shift at the St Johns River Shipbuilding Company after a labor dispute shut the yards briefly earlier. Kenneth E Small said production was proceeding as the yards reopened six hours after an order to close. Union officials called the stoppage unauthorized and hinted the dispute involved bringing outside workers into the yards.
London reports RAF heavy bombers hit Mannheim Ludwigshafen and nearby Ludwigshafen at the Rhine Neckar junction. Darmstadt and Aachen also bombed as Berlin and Paris air actions are noted with one American loss reported.
Finnish radio quoting Svenska Dagbladet said former French premier Edouard Herriot died in a sanatorium in the South of France. The report, recorded by U S government monitors, cited a dispatch from Berlin via Soneska Dagbladet. Earlier in September Nazis announced Herriot was gravely ill and confined to a sanatorium.
