German Ship Pamir Feared Sunk After Atlantic Storm
The German four mast ship Pamir, with about 90 aboard, sank in a fierce storm about 600 miles west of the Azores. Two empty lifeboats and a raft were found far out at sea, and rescue planes and ships hunted the area without locating the vessel or any survivors. The lifeboats bore the name Luebeck, and the ship was operated by Zerssen and Co of Luebeck, carrying cadets as a training ship. Coast Guard cutters and ships reached the last reported position as others steamed to assist.
