A U S soldier Victor Nickel testified at Girard's Japanese manslaughter trial that Girard suggested firing an empty cartridge case as a joke, killing Mrs Naka Sakai after enticing her within range. Nickel said he counted brass casings from a machine gun emplacement and that Girard indicated it was all right to proceed, while placing the shooter about 25 feet from the victim.
