Communists Shell Cambodian Forces In Renewed Offensives

Communist troops pressed government positions near Taing Kauh as about 6,000 Cambodian troops faced the assault with 2,000 North Vietnamese and Viet Cong in the village. Premier Lon Nol visited Taing Kauk area as offensives aimed to reopen the Shoun Kompong Thom corridor. In Saigon, South Vietnamese forces and U S airpower reported heavy losses in an amphibious operation along the Bassac and Mekong rivers. The U S command said five Americans died in a CH46 helicopter crash near Da Nang as the Army prepared to withdraw the 3rd Brigade, 9th Infantry, deactivating next month at Ft. Lewis.
