The Labor Department reports a 0.4 percent rise in overall living costs in August with food up 1.3 percent and eggs, lettuce, bread, and dairy products posting notable increases. The CPI reaches 113.8, a 2.5 percent year-to-date gain, while after tax earnings for factory workers with three dependents fall to 98.46 dollars.
The House Education and Labor Committee stripped Rep. Adam Clayton Powell of key chairman powers by a 27 to 1 vote. The Surveyor 2 lunar mission tumbled after a retrorocket firing, slowing briefly to about 116 revolutions per minute before contact was lost. Officials suspected possible damage but said nothing aboard could destroy the craft as it aimed to photograph Sinus Medii Central Bay.
