Certificate Presented to E A Peyton for War Service
Enterprise staff writer Braxton Younts recalls E A Peyton's wartime role as a tobacco liaison for Anvil Brand Inc. He received a Guinea Pig Club certificate after aiding the Subsistence Research and Development Laboratory of the Quartermaster Corps. Peyton helped pack cigarettes in tins to survive tropical storage, adapting machines to shorten cigarettes and ship 2,000,000 tins to the Pacific theater with 75 cigarettes per can. He led packaging innovations for emergency rations and created morale gifts for Filipinos and a covert Polish unit replica project with dummy cigarettes containing morale messages. He hopes such wartime packaging challenges do not reappear.
