MacArthur Defends Strategy in Pacific War
General MacArthur stated he would accept any role assigned as allied command discussions at Quebec raised questions on Mountbatten’s duties. He defended a strategy of rapid, massive strikes on main targets with air and fleet support, citing Lae and Salamaua as demonstrations and warning against costly island hopping. He stressed the aim to end the war quickly with decisive blows and noted heavy casualties would occur in island by island advances.
