Railroad tests coin operated food dispensers on trains

The Pennsylvania Railroad will trial five automatic coin operated food dispensers in a passenger coach on the New York Washington service. The machines will serve sandwiches pastries candy ice cream milk and coffee during a 30 day experimental period on select trains.

Lower Gasoline Prices Targeted by NC Committee

Raleigh officials report a Greensboro led panel will press to align North Carolina gasoline prices with Virginia levels. Governor Kerr Scott and Attorney General Harry McMullan backed the study after reviewing a State Bureau of Investigation report showing a 15 to two cent per gallon gap. NC motor users pay about 15 million dollars more yearly under current pricing. Committee members span Charlotte, Winston Salem, Morganton, Raleigh, Wilmington, Durham, Washington and Rocky Mount.

First Football Fatality in Winston-Salem Since 1923

James Purcell, 17, a letterman on Atkins High School Negro football squad, died at Kate Bitting Reynolds Memorial Hospital one hour after a practice injury. His death marks the first Winston-Salem football fatality since Leo Caldwell died in a Reynolds vs Charlotte game on Oct. 20, 1923.

Judge Burgwyn Not Guilty Of Drunk Driving

Franklin Virginia police court cleared North Carolina Superior Court Judge W. H. S. Burgwyn of drunken driving after a day long trial. Prosecutor said he believed Burgwyn innocent. Burgwyn claimed a dizzy spell during arrest for striking a funeral sign. Medical testimony cited vertigo and anemia while seven witnesses noted occasional dizziness or near intoxication due to his condition. Police officers testified he appeared intoxicated yet no blood test was given.

AP Newsman Awarded Silver Star in Korea

Marines Break Through North Korean Stronghold At Punch Bowl

Tuesday action on the eastern front saw U S Marines assault two entrenched North Korean companies atop a key hill west of the Punch Bowl valley near Inje. After dusk heat and flame lurched the bunkers, securing the hill by early Wednesday. West of there, U N troops recaptured a hill northwest of Yanggu and seized another height. Allies reported 20 dead enemy and 37 prisoners, with five minor probing attacks repulsed northeast of the Punch Bowl. One U N unit advanced three miles into enemy territory on the western front.
