Mundt Abandons Third-Party Talk In GOP Southern Alliance

Washington reports Sen. Karl Mundt advances an ally plan for Republicans and conservative Southern Democrats. About 100 delegates from 17 states formed a committee to explore uniting like minded Republicans and Southern Democrats. The group will not back Truman and may favor Taft Eisenhower or MacArthur, with several governors among attendees. Mundt and Sen. Owen Brewster are the only senators present.

Cain probes Truman on war time detention plan

Grounded Air Observer Killed at Bloody Ridge in Korea

1st Lt. Lee R. Hartell of Danbury Conn was killed during the Aug 27 attack near Bloody Ridge north of Yanggu. He directed artillery fire despite a direct hit and blood loss, earning posthumous credit for saving comrades. He left a wife, two daughters, and a son he never met.

Ex-State Dept Employee Described as Red Leader

Mrs. Alice Widener testified before the Senate Internal Security Committee that Julian R. Friedman, a former State Department employee, was described to her as one of the top brains of the Communist party. She said Friedman claimed a report for the department on the Chinese Communist labor movement and spoke of loyalty and means including violence if necessary. The session examined the Institute of Pacific Relations in a bid to uncover subversive influence on U S foreign policy in the Far East.

Hayesville farmer Neal Cabe buys Clay County farm

Neal Cabe of Hayesville purchased a new farm in Clay County. Clay County agent R G Vick notes Cabe started by liming deficient soils and sowing spring oats with Ladino clover and orchard grass. He fenced the property, is building a Grade A dairy barn, and plans to acquire dairy cows to utilize the pasture, hay, and corn.

Truckers Reject Compromise in McLean Co. Walkout

In Winston-Salem North Carolina striking drivers rejected a compromise proposal 147 to 61. They left picket lines for three hours at Southside Park to consider the plan offered by union officials. The plan promised wage increases of 5.4 cents per mile for single driver runs and 7.3 cents per mile for two man operations.

Proposal Details Job Scale and Vacation Benefits

The plan sets a 4.75 scale for single operations and 6.3 for two man operations. It would raise warehouse employees by 14 cents per hour and grant two weeks of vacation to all employees after four years. Currently workers receive one week after one year and two weeks after five years.
