New Arrests In Flogging Cases Likely
Birmingham September 16 AP Further arrests were expected today on 15 to 18 indictments in connection with flogging cases returned yesterday by the Jefferson county grand jury to Judge John P. McCoy. Lewis C. Albright was the first arrested on kidnapping charges connected with the whipping of Arthur Hitt. Hitt sold a 60 acre farm for far less than its value after the flogging. Police said Albright is personal attorney for W. J. Worthington, the buyer of Hitt’s property. The grand jury report condemned the taking of citizens from their homes and their homes being burned by marauders acting as self styled dictators. The report denounced attempts to influence testimony and intimidate witnesses. Julius Lumpkin was re-arrested on perjury charges. Judge McCoy sentenced witness L. D. Elwell to five days in jail for contempt of court. The report also condemned members of fraternal organizations who abuse oaths to avoid truth in court.
