Thurmond Got Double Price For Land Life

New York AP report says Strom Thurmond and partner bought 3000 acres of scrub timber in 1953 for about 14.53 an acre and later sold 66 acres at 492 an acre while others averaged 200. Thurmond called Life magazine article a liberal smear and said the deal was public record. Simons, now a federal judge, said they received a fair price and did not seek excess.

Chapel Hill mayor apologizes to Gov Scott for Lee remarks

The UNC appointment row widens as Chapel Hill mayor Howard Lee faces criticism over quotes calling Gov. Scott a bigot. Lee apologized after Washington discussions and UNC officials sought clarity on the timing and approval of his $11,000 a year professorship. The governor said he had no role in the delay and urged restraint. Lee disputed the Observer quotes and defended his broader stance on federal funds and state government.
