FBI Jails Pair Over Auto Theft Linked Across States
Federal agents in Wells Nevada captured two men on auto theft charges after a physician's car stolen from a hospital lot in Thomasville was traced across state lines. The car valued at 4200 dollars belonged to Dr George T Wood and was stolen between 9 and 930 pm. Officials Plan October Bids for S Main Street Widening
State highway officials announced October 24 bids will open for the South Main Street widening project from Russell Street to the superhighway cloverleaf. The state will fund most of the four lane widening with a median separation, and right of way is nearing completion. City leaders expect priority on N Main Street and support from the Chamber of Commerce for state aid.

Board Says Owner Can't Move Home
The High Point zoning board of adjustment denied one zoning deviation request and granted three at a meeting yesterday afternoon. Herman Hunter was denied permission to move a five room residence from 1106 Ward St in an industrial district. The board ruled that Hunter was unable to demonstrate the need for moving street. Permission for the erection of a duplex on the east side of W Burton was granted to Ralph R Wright. Although the location is on the borderline of an industrial district, board members allowed the construction because the area is primarily residential. Dr James T Roberson was granted a 13 foot front yard variation on FE Lexington for an office in a neighborhood retail district. The variation was made necessary by the odd shape of the lot, and the board ruled that it would not interfere with building requirements. Wallace A Kennedy Jr was given permission to add a car wash to a service station at 2010 S Main. The board also requested city officials to appoint a second alternate member for the group.

Two car crashes were reported on Ward and Trinity streets. Clifton Hartwell Prince, 28, of Thom asville was charged with drunken driving after colliding with an overpass abutment on Ward Street at 12 07 a.m. He caused $450 in front end damage. Trial set Sept 27. Kirby Don Moore, 27, of S Hamilton Street backed into Trinity Street at 2 45 p.m. injuring no one. Damage to Moore car $150 and to Marsh car $75. No arrests or injuries reported.

Trains Collide On E Green Street In Mild Crash
A diesel switching locomotive of HPTD and a Southern Railway boxcar collided on E Green Street near S Hamilton Street in light rain after 2 pm. No injuries reported. The boxcar overturned its wheels and the locomotive’s rear wheels left the tracks. National Guard five ton wrecker helped set the car and restore traffic within about two hours.
