President Kennedy announced the United States conducted its first underground nuclear test since 1958 at a Nevada site. The low yield explosion occurred at 1 pm Washington time with no fallout, as the nation restarts testing amid push for a broad test ban agreement with the Soviet Union.
Fifteen former Turkish officials including Adnan Menderes were sentenced to hang for acts violating the constitution during ten years of civilian rule. The revolutionary court handed 32 life terms and 447 prison terms while 98 were acquitted. The sentences await military junta approval with possible execution within 24 hours.
In a Charlotte case millionaire George King Cutter faces a noon verdict after the state rested its case in the first degree murder trial. The defense moved for dismissal arguing lack of proof of cause of death and insufficient bruising. Ricky Nycum testified about the July holiday weekend and his mother’s alcohol use.
Two incidents involving Soviet fighters near Berlin corridors spurred Western plans for countermeasures. The State Department said Soviet fighters endangered Pan American flights Berlin Hamburg and another in the south corridor, raising the prospect of defensive fighter actions near corridor termini.
President Kennedy states the United States will respond with force if attacked but believes the Berlin crisis can be solved through sincere negotiations.
