Rush To Aid Nine In Storm Beset Great Lakes
Two tugs and the freighter Pontiac moved toward a dredge 80 miles northeast of Marquette to aid nine men stranded aboard the Howard M. Jr. after a violent storm tore it from its ship. The Maryland ore carrier rode ashore nearby and 16 crew members were rescued by Saturday afternoon amid mountainous surf. Coast Guardsmen and police evacuated the Maryland crew by breeches buoy as surface conditions drew harsh verdicts from officials in Marquette and Ishpeming.
