At Panmunjom a Polish member of the Korean truce policing commission charged that a Polish interpreter who escaped to freedom was kidnaped by American Army officers. Jan Hajdukiewicz a 28 year old civilian interpreter, left the truce inspection team at a South Korean air base and sought political asylum with U S officers.
At a 55 nation World Bank and IMF gathering in Washington officials pressed the United States to lead toward convertible currencies and freer trade. UK representative Reginald Maudling lingered, possibly seeking assurances on pound sterling liberalization. Turkish finance minister Hassen Polatkan's aims centered on attracting private dollars. The meeting eyed suspending Czechoslovakia from the bank and fund if 625000 dollars remains unpaid by December 31.
