Drought Fear Hits Southern California Farms
In San Diego Cal up reporters warn that unless this winter brings heavy rainfall many parts of Southern California could turn to dust if storms fail. Five straight dry years have left reservoirs nearly dry and wells pumping only briefly. Citrus and avocado growers warn fruit may drop or stay small without adequate water. Coastal and inland dry farms report 40 to 60 percent drops in yields. Vista and nearby areas face strict water rationing as city reservoirs hover near 14 percent capacity. A San Diego citizens committee pushes water conservation while Congress weighs a new barrel for the San Diego aqueduct to bring Colorado River water, which may arrive too late to avert next year’s crop losses.
