Pacific shipping service to Wilmington promises freight savings
The Nelson steamship line will inaugurate water transportation from Seattle San Francisco and Los Angeles to Wilmington with October cargoes and November delivery. A minimum 2000 ton per trip is required to keep Wilmington as a port of call. Freight for canned goods from the Pacific coast to Wilmington drops to 45 cents per 100 pounds for large lots, versus rail rates of 95 cents to 1.05. Combined water rail rates to Asheville and other North Carolina cities show savings compared with rail alone.
