Wreck of Finnish Steamer Kuru Claims 80 Lives
At least 80 people perish when the Finnish steamer Kuru sinks in a heavy storm near Helsingfors after departing Tammerfors. About 200 passengers were aboard and many were in cabins when the bow dipped and the ship turned over. Lifeboats failed, rescuers from the Steamer Jarganne saved some, others washed ashore with lifebelts as harbor confusion and rough seas hindered early rescue efforts. The captain was among the survivors.
